Hybridizing Lead–Acid Batteries with Supercapacitors: A Methodology

Hybridizing a lead–acid battery energy storage system (ESS) with supercapacitors is promising solution to cope the increased degradation in standalone microgrids that suffer from irregular electricity profiles. There are many studies literature on such hybrid systems (HESS), usually examining various hybridization aspects separately. This paper provides holistic look at design of an HESS. A new control scheme proposed applies power filtering smooth out profile, while strictly adhering supercapacitors’ voltage limits. model introduced, which accounts for combined effects microcycle’s depth discharge (DoD) and temperature, considered separately literature. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis thermal parameters economic were performed using 90-day profile actual DC microgrid India infer benefit. The results show beneficial mainly poor conditions highlight need considers both DoD effect microcycle resolution temperate impact accurately assess gain hybridization.
